flesh (verse 16b). “Fulfil” translates a Greek word different from that similarly rendered in verse 14. A somewhat literal meaning is, “You will not accomplish.” Some of the versions use “gratify.” The form of the statement in Greek is especially emphatic: “you will never gratify, etc.” It does not express a command (as in RSV) but a strong assurance or promise that the believer whose life is Spirit-directed will be able to resist and conquer the lust of the flesh. “Lust” simply means desire, but
